Santarém
and its charming

The city of Santarém is the capital of Santarém district, located in the former province of Ribatejo and in statistical region of Alentejo, with 30,000 inhabitants in its urban perimeter (2021).

The municipality is bordered to the north by the municipalities of Porto de Mós, Alcanena and Torres Novas, to the east by Golegã and Chamusca, to the south-east by Alpiarça and Almeirim, to the south by Cartaxo, to the south-west by Azambuja and to the west by Rio Maior, in the Alentejo region.

The city is very old, contacted by Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians. Its foundation can be traced back to Greco-Roman and Christian mythology, and its mythical origins can be recognized in the names of Habis and Irene. The first documented traces of human occupation date back to the 8th Century BC.

Called the “Capital of the Gothic”, the city is a glimpse of all the architectural heritage, cited by Almeida Garrett in his novel “Viagens na Minha Terra” (Travels in My Homeland), regarding the city’s illustrious buildings.

A place with a lot of history and well worth a visit!
